How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing University Education in Sri Lanka

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming one of the most influential technologies shaping modern education. Universities around the world are using AI to support teaching, learning, research, assessment, administration, and student services. Sri Lanka is also entering this transformation. The increasing availability of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and other AI-powered platforms is changing how university students search for information, prepare assignments, learn difficult concepts, and conduct research.
The impact of AI on Sri Lankan higher education is particularly important because the country is attempting to build a more digitally skilled workforce and strengthen its position in the global technology economy. Sri Lanka's National AI Strategy identifies education as an important area for AI development and proposes strengthening AI education across the state university sector. Its higher-education proposals include new AI degree programmes, curriculum reforms, postgraduate education, AI education in business programmes, and basic AI literacy for students across disciplines.
At the same time, AI creates serious questions about academic integrity, inequality, privacy, employment, and the future role of lecturers. Therefore, the important question is not whether AI should enter Sri Lankan universities, but how universities can use AI responsibly while protecting the quality and values of higher education.
The Growing Role of AI in University Learning
Traditionally, university students depended heavily on textbooks, lecture notes, libraries, lecturers, and online sources. Today, AI tools can provide immediate explanations, summaries, examples, practice questions, translations, and personalized learning support.
For example, a student studying economics may ask an AI system to explain inflation using a simple example. A computer science student can use AI to understand programming concepts, while a sociology student can ask for explanations of difficult theoretical ideas. AI can therefore function as an additional learning assistant available at almost any time.
This does not mean that AI replaces university lecturers. Instead, it can complement traditional teaching. Lecturers can spend more time discussing complex ideas, encouraging critical thinking, conducting practical activities, and providing individual guidance, while AI can assist with routine learning tasks.
For Sri Lankan students studying in Sinhala, Tamil, or English, AI-based translation and language-support tools can also potentially reduce some language barriers. However, students must still verify information because AI-generated answers can contain factual errors, outdated information, or fabricated references.
AI and Personalized Education
One of the major advantages of AI is its ability to support personalized learning. In a traditional classroom, one lecturer may teach hundreds of students at the same time. It is difficult to provide each student with individual explanations according to their learning level.
AI can help address this problem by providing different explanations according to a student's needs. A student who finds a topic difficult can request a simpler explanation, additional examples, or practice questions. Another student who understands the basics can ask for more advanced problems.
This could be especially useful in large Sri Lankan university classes where lecturers have limited time for individual consultations. AI-powered learning platforms may eventually help identify areas where students are struggling and provide additional learning resources.
However, personalized education should not become completely dependent on automated systems. Human interaction remains important because education is not only about obtaining information. Universities also develop communication skills, social relationships, creativity, ethical thinking, teamwork, and independent judgment.
Transformation of University Assignments
AI is already changing the way university students complete assignments. Students can use AI to brainstorm ideas, organize information, improve grammar, translate text, generate outlines, and receive explanations.
This creates both opportunities and challenges.
Used responsibly, AI can improve the quality of a student's learning process. For example, a student may write an essay independently and then use AI to identify grammatical problems or suggest areas requiring clearer explanation. The student remains responsible for the final work.
However, submitting AI-generated material as one's own academic work can undermine academic integrity. If students allow AI to complete entire assignments without understanding the content, they may receive good grades without developing the skills that the assignment was designed to measure.
This issue is already being addressed within Sri Lankan universities. For example, the University of Colombo has developed a policy concerning the use of generative AI in academic and administrative activities. The policy emphasizes that students and staff remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, quality, and integrity of their work.
Therefore, Sri Lankan universities increasingly need assessment methods that evaluate students' actual understanding rather than simply their ability to produce written answers.
Changes to Examinations and Assessment
AI is also forcing universities to reconsider traditional examination systems.
For many years, university assessment has relied on essays, reports, take-home assignments, presentations, and examinations. Generative AI makes it increasingly difficult to determine whether a student completed an assignment independently.
This does not mean that written assignments will disappear. Instead, universities may need to introduce more personalized and process-based assessment.

University students and researchers can use AI tools to assist with literature searching, brainstorming research questions, organizing information, coding qualitative or quantitative data, translating materials, and improving academic writing.
For postgraduate students, AI may reduce the time required for some repetitive research tasks. Researchers can potentially use AI to identify patterns in large datasets or support data analysis.
However, research requires accuracy and originality. Researchers must verify information obtained through AI systems rather than automatically accepting it. AI can generate false citations, incorrect interpretations, or misleading conclusions.
Universities therefore need to teach students AI research literacy. Students should understand not only how to use AI tools but also how to evaluate their outputs.
AI and the Future Curriculum
The growth of AI means that university curricula must change.
Sri Lanka's AI policy direction recognizes this need. The proposed higher-education reforms include introducing specialized AI degrees while also incorporating AI-related knowledge into existing Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, mathematics, statistics, and other programmes. The strategy also proposes foundational AI education across university disciplines.
This is important because AI is no longer relevant only to computer science students.
Future business graduates may need to understand AI-based decision-making. Marketing students may use AI for content analysis and customer research. Engineering students may work with intelligent systems. Agriculture students may use AI for crop monitoring and prediction. Social science students may examine the social consequences of automation and algorithmic decision-making.
As a result, universities need both AI specialists and AI-literate graduates across different disciplines.
New Opportunities for Students
AI can create new career opportunities for Sri Lankan university graduates.
The global economy increasingly requires skills related to artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, software development, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and digital business. Sri Lanka's National AI Strategy aims to strengthen the country's AI capabilities and position Sri Lanka as a regional AI hub by 2030.
Universities can contribute by offering specialized degrees, postgraduate programmes, industry partnerships, internships, research projects, and practical AI training.
Students who develop AI skills alongside their main academic discipline may have an advantage in the future labour market. Importantly, this does not mean every student needs to become an AI engineer. Instead, students should understand how AI affects their profession and learn to work effectively with AI-powered technologies.
Challenges of AI Adoption
Despite its benefits, AI adoption in Sri Lankan universities faces several challenges.
The first is unequal access to technology. Not every student has the same quality of internet connection, computer equipment, or access to paid AI services. If universities rely heavily on AI without addressing this digital divide, educational inequalities could increase.
The second challenge is academic integrity. Students may become overly dependent on AI and lose important skills such as writing, reasoning, problem-solving, and independent research.
The third is accuracy. AI systems can produce convincing but incorrect information. This is particularly dangerous when students use AI for academic research without checking reliable sources.
Another concern is privacy. Students and researchers may unknowingly upload personal, confidential, or research-related information to AI platforms. Universities therefore need clear guidelines regarding what information can and cannot be entered into AI systems.
There is also the issue of lecturer training. Academic staff need opportunities to understand AI tools and their educational implications. Without proper training, universities may struggle to integrate AI effectively.
Sri Lanka's Emerging AI Policy Direction
Sri Lanka has begun moving toward a more structured approach to AI in higher education. In May 2026, the University Grants Commission, with support from the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, launched a national AI Policy Framework initiative for state universities. The framework focuses on responsible, ethical, inclusive, and effective AI use in areas including teaching, learning, research, administration, and student support.
The initiative is significant because it indicates that AI is being considered not simply as a technological tool but as an issue requiring institutional policies and ethical standards.
The UGC has also sought views from academics, students, researchers, university staff, industry professionals, graduates, policymakers, and members of the public regarding implementation of the AI policy framework.
This broader consultation is important because successful AI adoption requires cooperation between students, lecturers, university administrators, government institutions, technology companies, and society.
The Changing Role of Lecturers
AI will not necessarily make university lecturers less important. Instead, it may change their role.
A lecturer who previously spent considerable time explaining basic concepts may increasingly act as a facilitator, mentor, researcher, and evaluator. Lecturers can teach students how to question AI-generated information, identify misinformation, use evidence, develop original arguments, and apply knowledge to real-world problems.
The most valuable university education in the AI era will therefore not simply teach students what to know. It will teach them how to think.
Critical thinking, creativity, communication, ethical reasoning, collaboration, and problem-solving will become increasingly important because AI can generate information, but humans remain responsible for deciding how that information should be used.
Building an AI-Ready University System
For Sri Lanka to gain the maximum benefit from AI, universities need a balanced strategy.
First, AI literacy should be introduced across disciplines rather than being limited to technology-related degrees.
Second, universities should provide training programmes for lecturers and administrative staff.
Third, institutions should establish clear rules concerning acceptable and unacceptable AI use in assignments, examinations, research, and administration.
Fourth, universities should improve digital infrastructure and ensure that students from different socioeconomic backgrounds have reasonable access to technology.
Fifth, universities should encourage AI-related research and partnerships with industry and government institutions.
Finally, AI adoption must remain human-centred. Technology should support educational goals rather than determine them.
